Weekly Update 10/24/2009

Weather, weather, what wet wild windy winter weather! (Now there's a tongue-twister for you)

With the end of October coming closer every day, the weather here in Tampa Bay is staying unusually warm. Daytime temps will be in the mid to high 80s for the upcoming week, with rain possible each day.

Weather Trivia

Sorry about not having a question this past week, but I'll make sure to have more, extra hard questions in the future. This week's question is below:

Yes, you read that right.  According to this story, starting Oct. 30th, there will be a four week period in which TWC plans to show a different weather themed movie each Friday night.

The first movie shown will be "The Perfect Storm".

Weekly Update 10/18/2009

The weather across the area this weekend has been cold, with record lows in some places. Luckliy, I can assure you that temperatures will warm up after tomorrow.

This week, residents of West Central Florida can expect temperatures in the low 80s after tomorrow, when we'll have temps lingering in the 70s.

Existing El Nino conditions are expeted to strengthen and persist. Here are some of the things we can expect as time goes on:

Warmer-than-average temperatures are favored across much of the western and central U.S., especially in the north-central states from Montana to Wisconsin. Though temperatures may average warmer than usual, periodic outbreaks of cold air are still possible.

  • Below-average temperatures are expected across the Southeast and mid-Atlantic from southern and eastern Texas to southern Pennsylvania and south through Florida.
  • Above-average precipitation is expected in the southern border states, especially Texas and Florida. Recent rainfall and the prospects of more should improve current drought conditions in central and southern Texas. However, tornado records suggest that there will also be an increased chance of organized tornado activity for the Gulf Coast region this winter.
  • Drier-than-average conditions are expected in the Pacific Northwest and the Ohio and Tennessee River Valleys.
  • Northeast: Equal chances for above-, near-, or below-normal temperatures and precipitation. Winter weather in this region is often driven not by El Niño but by weather patterns over the northern Atlantic Ocean and Arctic, such as the North Atlantic Oscillation. These patterns are often more short-term, and are generally predictable only a week or so in advance.
  • California: A slight tilt in the odds toward wetter-than-average conditions over the entire state.
  • Alaska: Milder-than-average temperatures except along the western coast. Equal chances for above-, near-, or below-median precipitation for most areas except above median for the northwest.
  • Hawaii: Below-average temperatures and precipitation are favored for the entire state..

We'll be fine, as long as we don't attempt to control winter.

Weather Trivia

The answer to last week's question is Mark Twain. I am delaying this week's weather trivia question until tomorrow, so if you have any ideas, send them in.

Weekly Update 10/10/2009

We are now more than half-way through hurricane season, and we've only seen ten storms form in the Atlantic, only one of which directly affected the U.S. with a landfall. Of course, now that I say that, a major hurricane will come flying into Tampa Bay.

The National Climatic Cata Center released their monthly State of the Climate report, and announced that the average temperature for the U.S. last month was above average.

Local Weather

Here in Florida, the only thing I've noticed with the temperature is that it has stayed above 90 degrees for far too long. The heat really isn't even the problem, its the humidity. Across the area this week, we'll have a small chance for rain each day with temps in the low to mid 90s.

Weather Trivia

The correct answer to last week's question of " In weather, what does RFD stand for?" is Rear-Flank Downdraft. This week's question is below:

Weekly Update 10/03/2009

Not much has changed lately. Now that October has arrived, a gradual change in temperature will occur around the nation.

Back in Florida, let's talk about Local Weather.

Across the Tampa Bay Area, we saw a decrease in temperature the past few days because of a cold front that passed through the area. Now, temperastures are going to warm back up in to the low to mid, maybe even high 90s for next week.

Here is an article by NWS Ruskin on next week's temperatures.

There will also be a chance of rain each day.

Weather Trivia

The answers to last week's question of "In the National Wather Service, what do the terms MIC, WCM, and SOO stand for?"  are below:

MIC stands for Meteorologist-In-Charge, WCM stands for Warning Cooridination Meteorologist, and SOO stands for Science and Operations Officer.
