Got Ice? 02/18/2010

Got Ice?
As everybody knows by now, or should know anyway, there have been some pretty cold days in the Northeast lately.

Here is a picture (click for larger image) that a friend in New York sent me yesterday. This icicle was measured to be 1 yard long. It was 4 inches at the top and 2 inches in the middle.

When the icicle was found, it was 28 degrees outside. Here is a link  to current New York City weather information from the National Weather Service.

(The link is to mobile.weather.gov. In my experience, New Yorkers tend to browse the Internet from their phones more than regular computers. Mobile.weather.gov works for regular computers as well as phones.)

No, I'm not making this up.

There was a mixture of snow/sleet in West Central Florida late last night and early this morning as a small amount of moisture moved into the area along with dropping temperatures.

We haven't had snow or sleet in West Central Florida since 1996, and it hasn't  snowed in the Tampa area since  January 17, 1977, when WTVT meteorologist Roy Leep was the only local Tampa area meteorologist to predict that it would snow. Tampa had a reported snowfall of .2 inches that day.

We've also seen a few temperature records broken this week across the area. Back in December, we were complaining about record warmth, and now we're going to have near record cold over the weekend. Compared with the winter weather woes of Europe, we really don't have much to complain about. The situation could be much worse.

The forecast for this weekend calls for near record temps again. Next week though, it looks like things should start to warm back up. We could be back to normal by the middle of the week.

Here are some pictures of the sleet that I took at my house. (It was on the roof and car)

If you don't already know, we are going to have some pretty cold air move into the area next week.

We'll see dry but sunny conditions along with the frigidly cold air.
Night-time temps will be down in the low to mid 20s, with daytime temps in the low 50s.
Welcome to 2010 everybody. The Weekly Update will be posted Sunday.

If you live in the Midwest or the Northeast, you're probably seeing white.

Massive snow storms are beating down on those of you crazy enough to go out today. Parts of Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois are expecting over a foot of snow, along with many areas in New England. New York City will not be seeing snow, but will have wind between 15 and 22 miles per hour tonight, with gusts as high as 47. For more winter weather information as well as your local weather forecast, stay tuned to your local NWS Office, your local news, and The Weather Channel.

Info on the current situation can be found here.

I know, I don't usually post multiple times in one day, but this is important.

Telescope blasts into space to find other Earths

Last night, a NASA telescope was launched, embarking on what will be at the least a 3.5 year mission to find other planets like Earth. The goal is to find, if they exist, Earth-like planets circling stars in the so-called habitable zone — orbits where liquid water could be present on the surface of the planets.

There is a possibility of rain next Saturday, but don't trust what is forecast too early, as the models are never 100% accurate. This what the GFS is saying for next Saturday:

                                       ***UPDATE ON NFL PLAYERS***
According to the Coast Guard, the boat belonging to Marquis Cooper has been found, along with former University of South Florida player Nick Schuyler, who was hanging on to the side of the boat. The Coast Guard says Cooper, Detroit Lions free agent Corey Smith and another former USF player, William Bleakley, remain missing. TV showed Schuyler being helped from a Coast Guard helicopter at Tampa General Hospital. He appeared conscious.

Two NFL Players Missing At Sea After Bad Weather

Two NFL Players went missing yesterday after leaving for a fishing trip on Saturday. The two players, Corey Smith and Marquis Cooper, as well as former University of South Florida players Will Bleakley and Nick Schuyler were onboard. Weather conditions worsened through the day and the men did not return as expected in the evening.

A relative reported them missing, and the Coast Guard searched a wide area west of Clearwater Pass but were hampered by rough seas and weather.

By Monday, the harsh conditions were starting to subside. Waves were 6 to 8 feet, still enough for a small craft advisory, but considerably smaller than the 15-foot waves Sunday, National Weather Service meteorologist Todd Barron said.

Coast Guard Capt. Timothy M. Close said at least one of the men was an experienced boater, and relatives provided the Coast Guard with GPS coordinates from previous fishing expeditions.

Tuesday through Thursday we will see a return to cold weather, as the jetstream heads our way once again.

We'll start Tuesday with highs in the mid to high 50s, which is a bit below average for this time of year, and then lows on Tuesday night in the high 20s and low 30s. Wednesday, expect highs in the low 50s and lows in the lower 20s, and possibly extreme high teens, depending on your location. Thursday we should see highs in the low to mid 50s and lows can be expected to reach the lower to mid 20s, with Friday hopefully warming up some into the mid 60s.

Another major event: Snow in London!

It was the biggest snow event to hit London in 18 years, as eight inches fell in 24 hours. All five airports in the city were shut down briefly, with close to 800 flights cancelled throughout the day. Also, because of the weather, trains and buses did not run.

The winter storm that hit Kentucky on January 27-28 left thousands of people without power because of all the power lines down. Over 600,000 people are still without power and officials are saying it could be up to two weeks before power is completely restored. Ryanweather has continuing coverage of this event.

Overall, the storm, which hit from Oklahoma to Pennsylvania, left more than 1.5 million people in the dark. In Arkansas, another hard hit state, about 178,000 people are still without power, out of an estimated 300,000. The storm also dumped 4 inches of snow on New York City.

Here are pictures of the effects of this storm:

Cold weather is on the way for the area as a cold front will move through tomorrow, but Friday is when it will really hurt us, because temps are going to be back in the low 30s and high 20s Friday night and Saturday night. On top of the cold weather, we'll also be getting some rain chances for tomorrow and Friday. Sometime next week, I may decide to have daily blog entries, if I can find the time for it.
